Picking the 2012 NBA All-Star Reserves

Yesterday, in a surprising move, the NBA announced the starters for the 2011 All Star game. Interestingly, the thing they announced about those 2011 starters was that all of them are also starters again in 2012. Not really, but 8 out of 10 is a lot.

Maybe this is just an unfortunate victim of the shortened season, where All-Star voting started a week into the season, but it was pretty easy (PS- follow @SpreeGoogs on Twitter already) to guess who this year’s starters would be.

In case you missed the big news, it looks like our NBA All-Star starters are going to be:

East: Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard

West: Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin and Andrew Bynum

In 2012, Kevin Love is the hardest working man in show business.

The fans got the East right, even though Dwyane Wade hasn’t played any games this year (what other 2 in the East deserves it more? Can’t think of one? No one can.)

I’d rather see Kevin Love over Griffin and I like both Lamarcus Aldrige and Marc Gasol more than Bynum in the West.

There are two ways to look at the shortened season’s effect on the All-Star rosters. The first way is what happened in the selection of the starters — the shortened season gives us so little experience with the players that we need to rely more on last year’s action to determine the All-Stars. But I see things another way — the shortened season gives us a small sample size, which means that anyone can put together 20 fluke games and deserve a spot on the All-Star team.

But what’s done is done and there’s no taking any of it back. What isn’t done is filling out the rest of the teams. Last time I checked, SpreeGoogs doesn’t get a vote in that process, but in case things have changed, I’m going to submit my supplementary picks right now.
